Variety is the key to
happy and active older cats.
Playtime is important
for cats. This isn't a problem in younger cats, as kittens have a natural
rambunctiousness. All it takes is throwing a paper bag on the floor and they
take care of the rest. Immediately it becomes imaginary prey, to be pounced on
one minute, and the next, it is suddenly a fort to hide in, and then a cozy
place to curl up.
With older cats,
especially indoor cats, it's more of a challenge. They don't go out of their
way to play, so it's up to the owners to stimulate them. There are several ways
to do this:
A great place to start
is a leash and harness. Yes, with a bit of patience, it's possible to train even
an adult cat to use a harness. Once your favorite mouser associates the harness
with the chance to explore the great outdoors, you may even find him dragging
the leash to you.
A variety of toys will
also keep your furry pal sharp and alert. When buying toys, look for vibrant
colors that will catch the imagination. Toys that feature feathers are popular,
particularly if they are attached to a coil that will make them reach.
One of the simplest
games of all is to place your cat in a dry bathtub and adding a ping pong ball.
They will chase it for hours.
In short, all it takes is a few
toys, a little imagination, and a bit of effort on your part, and your cat will
be purrfectly content.
